We might also ask you for your tenancy agreement to verify that you are the person responsible for the premises.
How can I give my meter readings to Niccolo Power?
Make sure to submit meter readings to us each month to avoid estimated bills. To submit a meter reading you can call us on 0131 610 8868. You will get a chance to talk to one of our advisers and they will note your meter reading. Alternatively, you can send your meter reading to info@niccolo.co.uk.
Why are some of my bills estimated?
Regularly submitting your meter readings is essential to avoid being overcharged for your supply. As your supplier, we have to bill you each month. If you fail to inform us how much energy you consumed, we will have no choice to send you a bill based on an estimate. To do that we take a look at your previous bills and your average consumption. We always try to be as accurate as possible but sometimes estimated bills can be higher or lower than your actual energy usage. A good way to avoid estimated bills is to install a smart meter. They automatically send readings to us, saving you the trouble of having to check the meter and contact us each month.
What is the Climate Change Levy and why is it on my bill?
Business electricity is subject to taxes, CCL being one of them. CCL is an environmental tax that the government introduced to encourage businesses to be more environmentally friendly. That said, domestic customers do not have to pay it. If your business pays the standard VAT rate, you have no choice but to pay the CCL. How much you will have to pay depends on how much energy you use. The CCL rates change each year. To give you an idea of how much you have to be prepared to pay, here are the most recent CCL rates:
Taxable commodity | Rate from 1 April 2020 | Rate from 1 April 2021 |
Electricity | 0.00811 | 0.00775 |
Gas | 0.00406 | 0.00465 |
LPG | 0.02175 | 0.02175 |
Any other thing | 0.03174 | 0.03640 |
What is the unit rate?
The unit rate is the price that you will pay for each unit of electricity or gas you consume. As electricity is measured in kilowatt per hour (kWh), a unit rate refers to the cost per kWh used by your business. Unit rates vary depending on your tariff, your location, and the duration of your energy contract. Get in touch today to find out what electricity rates we offer.
What is the standing charge?
The standing charge is a fixed cost that you have to pay on top of your unit charge. This cost remains the same no matter how much energy you consume. Since 2016, suppliers no longer have to add the standing charge to their tariffs. Nevertheless, most of them still do. Even if a tariff does not have a standing charge, it is likely that the unit price for electricity or gas will be higher to compensate.
Why do I have to pay the standing charge?
Energy customers have to pay the standing charge so that energy suppliers can cover the costs they pay to be able to provide electricity to you. That said, the standing charge represents the cost you pay to the supplier because they give you access to electricity. Some costs that suppliers incur supplying you gas and electricity include:
- Using and maintaining pipes and wires
- Keeping your premises connecting to the UK energy network
- Contributing to government initiatives designed to reduce CO2 emissions
- Sending people to take your meter readings
- Paying regional distribution networks for their services.
As you see, suppliers do not operate for free. That is why most of the energy contracts available in the UK include the standing charge. There is no single fee for the standing charge. Customers typically pay between 5 to 50p per day for electricity and 10 to 80p per day for gas.
Are Niccolo Power’s charges fixed or variable?
At Niccolo Power, we offer various types of contracts. Some of them come with fixed and others with variable charges. Which solution is better depends on how you use energy and what type of business you are. Get in touch with us today and we will advise you on what tariff would be the best choice for you.
What to do if I want to leave Niccolo Power and switch to a different supplier?
We are sad to see you leave but we understand that sometimes the needs of your business might be better met elsewhere. If you want to leave Niccolo Power, you have to give us notice as per the Terms and Conditions of your contract. If you have signed a fixed-term contract, for example for three years, you might have to pay an early termination fee. Usually, you should let us know at least 28 days before you plan to switch to a different provider. If you are on a variable price contract you do not have to provide the notice.
How can I get a smart meter?
Thanks to the smart meter rollout happening in the UK, your supplier has to give you the chance to get a smart meter at no extra cost. UK suppliers are responsible for providing smart meters to everyone in the country by the end of 2025.
If you would like to have one installed at your premises, call us or send us an email and we will arrange it for you. We will fix a day and time for the installation and a trained engineer will come to your premises to install the smart meter. The process will take around two hours. How long you will have to wait for the engineer’s visit depends on how many people are waiting in line to have their smart meters fitted. You do not have to own the property to get the smart meter. You can upgrade even when you’re renting.
Are smart meters safe?
Smart meters are covered by UK and EU product safety laws so no matter what supplier you are with, you can be sure that they are safe. In addition to that, smart meters are extremely accurate. They record your energy consumption continuously and send this data to your supplier. Thanks to smart meters, you can be sure that you only pay for energy you actually use.
Can my energy supply be cut off?
Sometimes it can happen that your supply needs to be disconnected temporarily. Power cuts can happen, for example, when there is an issue with the supply in your area and it needs to be fixed. These disruptions are usually short. We can also disconnect your energy supply if you fail to pay your bills.
If you are struggling to pay your bills let us know and we will do our best to find a solution. We understand that sometimes our customers might be facing financial difficulties and we are happy to come up with flexible payment options for them.
