According to the official site https://bcorporation.net/, a “B Corp” is a new kind of business that is attempting to balance purpose and profit. They claim to be enacting this by considering the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. They are set up to be legally obligated to do this. In an interview with Kate Sandle (Community Manager for B Corp UK) it was revealed that the “B” in B Corp initially stood for Benefit Cooperation. However, this has since changed to be interpreted as the businesses see fit through an underlying thread of meaning. Kate Sandle’s favourite interpretation comes from the Ghandi quote “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. It is also known as “Better” Cooperation. In short, the idea is that these businesses are theoretically more ethical as they are making efforts to be more socially and environmentally responsible.
It doesn’t matter what the size of the business is, any business can become a B Corp, however, there is a system, a three-part system, to indite new businesses into the fold of Being Better. The steps to becoming a B Corp are:
- Complete the B Impact Assessment. You’ll need to score at least 80 out of a maximum 200
- Make sure you meet the legal requirements and work on what amendments you can make if you don’t currently
- Sign the B Corp Declaration of Interdependence and Term Sheet, making your status official
The Impact Assessment can be found here, and apparently takes two to three hours according to their site.
They have set up each business that wishes to join them to undertake a three step process:
- Assess
- Compare
- Improve
| Assess | This step walks through how to become a better business and looks at how you’re doing right now. |
| Compare | Your business will be compared to others taking part in the programme. This will come firstly in a quick snapshot of where you can improve, then a more holistic report on the overall functioning of your company. |
| Improve | They create a customised improvement plan to help you meet the standards of sustainability and responsibility you set for yourself. |
One of the biggest parts of the B Corp ethos is to attempt to utilise business and business culture as a force for good. This makes sense, as these systems already exist, and attempting to rework them may be more effective then overhauling capitalism in general. One important aspect that B corp uses to do this is by requiring that businesses sign up to “THE B CORP DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE”
The declaration stands thus:
As B Corporations and leaders of this emerging economy, we believe:
- That we must be the change we seek in the world.
- That all business ought to be conducted as if people and place mattered.
- That, through their products, practices, and profits, businesses should aspire to do no harm and benefit all.
- To do so requires that we act with the understanding that we are each dependent upon another and thus responsible for each other and future generations.
How this is physically enacted is by, making sure that B Corp Certification doesn’t just evaluate a product or service; it assesses the overall positive impact of the company that stands behind it. And increasingly that’s what people care most about.
Certified B Corporations achieve a minimum verified score on the B Impact Assessment—a rigorous assessment of a company’s impact on its workers, customers, community, and environment—and make their B Impact Report transparent on bcorporation.net. Certified B Corporations also amend their legal governing documents to require their board of directors to balance profit and purpose.
The combination of third-party validation, public transparency, and legal accountability help Certified B Corps build trust and value. B Corp Certification is administered by the non-profit B Lab.
